Musculoskeletal treatment
At the Dr Westwood Clinic we have a range of injectable treatment for musculoskeletal complaints. This includes individual or combination treatments of:
Corticosteroid injection:
Steroids relieve pain and swelling. Injections are most commonly used for acute inflammation and arthritis. They are also used to enable physiotherapy treatment to be commenced with less or no pain.
Hyaluronic acid injection:
Similar to synovial fluid which occurs naturally in joints, HA acts to lubricate and protect against shock and stress. HA is commonly used for conditions such as knee, hip, shoulder, hand and ankle arthritis. Reducing pain, improving function and facilitating rehabilitation.
PRP (Platelet-rich plasma) injection:
Sports injuries as well as degenerative joint or tendon conditions can be successfully treated with PRP. It has been used by top athletes including Tiger Woods and Rafael Nadal to speed up their recovery following injury.
PRP injections use a concentrated suspension of platelets from your own blood to help repair damaged cartilage, tendons, ligaments, muscles, and bones. PRP can also reduce inflammation and pain, and help you return to normal activities more quickly.
A course of 3 PRP injections is recommended for large joints (hip, knee, ankle) performed 1-2 weeks apart. A course of 2 PRP injections is recommended for small joints and tendon pain, performed 1-2 weeks apart.
